Abstract
A rare case of mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the trachea was reported. The patient was admitted to our hospital complaining of hemoptysis and dyspnea. Roentgenogram of the neck showed a shadow of an abnormal mass in the upper portion of the trachea. A CT-scan revealed the tumor a arising from the right wall of the trachea at the level from the lower margin of the thyroid to the upper margin of the sternum. The tumor almost completely obstructed the lumen of trachea but was localized in the tracheal wall. Bronchoscopy also revealed that the tumor showed papillary growth and obstructed the tracheal lumen. The operative procedure consisted of ring resection of the portion of the trachea containing the tumor and reconstruction of the trachea by end-to-end anastomosis. Histologically the tumor was mucoepidermoid carcinoma and neither extratracheal extension nor any lymph node metastasis was detected. The patient is well without any symptoms four months after surgery and his prognosis is good.
