Phonetic elements of Kanji have not been taken up in class materials as often as semantic elements such as sanzui and gonben. However as we deduce teki as the reading of 滴 from 適, the phonetic element 商 is utilized in inferring readings of yet-to-be learned Kanji, and this is a widely used, effective strategy used by both native and non-native speakers of Japanese. The present report focuses on the process in which advanced learners, including native speakers of Chinese, familiarize themselves with practical use of phonetic elements, through tasks given in three parts.
