It is becoming more and more important to foster learners' ability to learn the Japanese language outside of a class setting. Popular culture, ubiquitous on the internet, can provide motivation for them to do so. This study reports how learners set goals, selected material, and structured their own learning in a seven-week course titled "Japanese Language in Films." A questionnaire conducted after the course shows that the learners were able to grasp what/how they could learn using films as a versatile material and that they acquired confidence in their autonomous learning for the future.
