In our previous paper, we reported that hypothermia (HT) during ischemia protects against delayed neuronal death in the hippocampus following transient forebrain ischemia, which is induced by occlusion of bilateral common carotid arteries (BCCA) in C57BL/6J mice. However, the mechanism of protection of delayed neuronal death by HT during ischemia has not yet been clarified. In this study, we investigated the effect of HT during ischemia on main brain phospholipids content following transient forebrain ischemia compared with those of normothermia (NT), caused delayed neuronal death. In NT mice, phosphatidylcholine (PC) contents of ischemia-reperfusion (IR) groups were significantly lower than those of control groups. Phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) contents were also lower than those of control groups (p=0.07). However, the changes in the HT mice were not observed between control and IR groups. In both NT and HT mice, phosphatidylinositol (PI), phosphatidylserine (PS) and sphingomyelin (SM) contents were not significantly different between control and IR groups. Our results indicate that HT during ischemia suppresses the specific reduction of PC and PE contents induced by the transient forebrain ischemia in the BCCA occlusion model of C57BL/6J mice.
