Abstract

A brief list and a key to the Japanese bats of the subgen. Selysius (gen. Myotis) were given. Among the species, fujiensis and hosonoi of Honshu and gracilis and ikonnikovi of Hokkaido are similar in external features and difficult to identify. But the ratio of the length of facial portion of skull to that of braincase (fig.2, A/B×100) is evidently different in these species as shown in the following table and by this character they are easely_distinguished.
Mystacinus group. the ratio 100-108.
Ear long (13-14.5 mm), back dark brown .....................m. gracilis.
Ear short (12-12.5 mm), back reddish brown ...............m. fujiensis.
Ikonnikovi group. the ratio 79-90.
Post-calcaneal keel absent, back tawny olive .....................ikonnikovi
Post-calcaneal keel evident, back rufous ..............................hosonoi.
