Overview of the Emerging Sources Citation Index: Enhancement of journal selection and the latest Journal Selection Process of Web of Science Core Collection

Abstract

The recently launched "Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI)" is a new journal citation index database available in the "Web of Science Core Collection" on the "Web of Science" scholarly information platform provided by Clarivate Analytics. This article outlines the history of this new citation index and explains the latest journal evaluation and selection processes. In addition, it shows the difference between ESCI and the Science Citation Index, Social Science Citation Index, and Arts and Humanities Citation Index editions in terms of selection criteria and its relationship to the Journal Citation Reports. The ESCI journal selection criteria is a subset of the selection criteria for the other three journal index editions, providing a complimentary collection of journals in the Web of Science Core Collection.
