With the purpose to elucidate the origin of phagocytes in ascites the author carried out various cytological investigations and other vital observations concerning the milky spots in the greater omentum of mice and rabbits by means of the tissue culture; and also in order to clarify still further the relationship between the milky spots in the greater omentum and the phagocytes in ascites, the auther perfcr.ned excision of the greater omentum in mice and obtained the following results:
1. Cytologically, the cells of the milky spots in the greater omentum are exactly identical with phagocytes, in ascites, and they are not histiocytes but are cells rather resembling closely to monocytes.
2. In the ascites after excision of the greater omentum number of cells are decreased, and what is more, small cells become scarce and the majority of cells are decrepit from age.
3. From these findings it is clear that the milky spots in the greater omentum are the souce supplying phagocytes in ascites.
