[Purpose] To report the early outcome of simultaneous pterygium and cataract surgery with toric intraocular lens (T-IOL) implantation in cataract patients with against-the-rule astigmatism.
[Subjects and methods] Subjects were 11 cataract eyes of 10 patients with pterygium and preoperative against-the-rule astigmatism (75.3 ± 5.6 years, mean age ± standard deviation) who had undergone simultaneous pterygium and cataract surgery with T-IOL implantation between March, 2013 and May, 2017 (Group S). The controls were 25 eyes of 17 patients with pterygium and preoperative against-the-rule astigmatism who had only received cataract surgery with T-IOL implantation (age, 77.0 ± 7.9 years; Group O). Changes in corneal astigmatism, uncorrected and corrected visual acuity (VA), subjective and objective spherical and cylindrical powers assessed preoperatively and after postoperative 1 month were compared between Group S and O.
[Results] Although severer against-the- rule astigmatism was observed postoperatively in Group S, uncorrected visual acuity, subjective and objective spherical power, and subjective and objective cylindrical power improved equally as Group O.
[Conclusion] In cataract eyes with preoperative against-the-rule astigmatism, simultaneous pterygium and cataract surgery with T-IOL implantation is considered adequate.
