THE AIM OF THIS STUDY IS TO DEVELOP MODELS FOR THE EVALUATION OF SAFETY ON RESIDENTIAL STREETS. IN THIS PAPER, THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE PROPOSED MODELS ARE REVIEWED AND NEW INDICES CONSIDERING THE OCCUPIED SPACE OF RUNNING. VEHICLES AND THE AREA WHERE THE CROSSINGS OF VEHICLE AND PEDESTRIANS OCCUR ARE PROPOSED. THE RELATIONHIP BETWEEN THE OCCUPIED SPACE AND VEHICLE SPEED IS DEFINED BY EXPRIMENTS WHICH MEASURE THE DRIVERS' AND PEDESTRIANS' PERCEPTION OF DANGER WHEN APPROACHING ONE ANOTHER. COMPARING THE RESIDENTS' SAFETY SENSE OF THEIR FRONTAL STREETS WITH THE SAFETY EVALUATION INDICES, THIS PAPER SHOWS THE BEST INDICES FOR EVALUATION OF PEDESTRIANS' SAFETY AND STREET SAFETY.
