Abstract
The aim of this study is to analyze built-up area in urban space from the perspective of the three dimensional morphology of architectural space and voids. 'Void in urban space' is used here to refer to all open space unoccupied by built from. Void space should be accepted more positively because it has influence on the urban environment. First, some evaluation methods for the void space including 'the Built From Protection Method' are developed. Second, a database, in terms of building forms in some high density areas of Tokyo is created based on the data used in the Geographical Information Systems. Third, by applying to this database the methods proposed by the author, the three dimensional properties of architectural space and voids in Tokyo's built-up area are quantitatively analyzed.
