In the field of architecture and city planning, citizen participation in the planning process is very important. It is necessary to clarify the methodology of studies on participation to make effective participation system. In this paper I analyze studies which deal with citizen participation on the academic papers from 1960 to the present. Using these data as a basis, I attempt to grasp their methodologies and show a perspective for the forthcoming studies. From this consideration, methodologies of studies are classified following three approach: 1) statistical approach which analyzes resident's consciousness; 2) interpretative approach which examines causality by case studies; 3) participant approach that researcher himself designs an event and puts into practice.
