The purpose of this study was to examine the validity of the Toilet Assistance Chart (TAC) that we developed. The TAC consists of 14 items addressing, scored in three stages. Subjects were 19 inpatients in a convalescent rehabilitation ward, 15 of whom were stroke patients. Our TAC scores were evaluated at the time of admission and discharge, along with our responses on the Functional Independence Measure (FIM), Berg Balance Scale (BBS) and Motion Ability Scale (MAS). The relationships between these measures were then analyzed, and results indicated significant correlations between patients' TAC scores and their scores on the FIM, BBS and MAS at admission. Furthermore, 13 of the 14 items of the TAC were correlated with the FIM, BBS and MAS. In conclusion, our study verified the validity of the TAC as a measure of independence of toileting. In future, it will be necessary to also verify the chart's reliability.
