Abstract

As a first step toward understanding the distribution of mesoscale atmospheric gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) concentrations, we collected and measured GEM using a passive sampler and an active sampler in urban and forest areas in Japan including roadside locations, and investigated a conversion factor based on these measurements. Passive sampler and active sampler measurements showed a linear relationship, and we learned that multiplying the passive sampler value (ng/day) by 6.13 (conversion factor; day/㎥) yields the atmospheric concentration (ng/㎥). This made it possible to measure atmospheric concentrations of GEM with a passive sampler.
