Abstract

The storage of ferrous parts of metals has been carried out by covering the surfaces with rust preventive agent or oil. However, the applied rust preventive agent or oil must be cleaned up at the end of the whole processes; and great cost is needed for the disposal of used wipers or cleaning agent in order to remove the oil. In this study, the electric rust preventive storage method, which employs water without oil to avoid the formation of rust in the metals' ferrous parts, is proposed. The characteristic of rust prevention effect is experimentally investigated from an electrochemistry viewpoint. Rust formation is hindered for more than three days by using the developed rust preventive storage apparatus based on the obtained characteristics. The electric power consumption for three days of rust prevention is less than 0.03W. Furthermore, the influence of hydrogen embrittlement on metal parts, which effects electric rust prevention in water, does not matter for practical use. It is considered that improvements in the production field environment and work efficiency are estimated by using the storage method with the electric rust preventive machining.
