Purpose:This study clarifies the actual state of basic skills for working adults among new nurses in convalescent rehabilitation wards by comparing them with those of new nurses working in acute care wards.
Methods:An anonymous self‒administered questionnaire survey was conducted among new nurses in acute care wards and convalescent rehabilitation wards.
Result:A total of 389 questionnaires were distributed, with 342 returned and 329 valid responses(84.5%). Comparing the basic skills for working adults of new nurses in convalescent rehabilitation wards and acute care wards, new nurses in acute care wards demonstrated significantly higher levels of “initiative” and “perseverance” than those in convalescent rehabilitation wards. They also showed significantly higher levels in the competency elements of “proactivity” “engagement” “planning” “creativity” “communication” and “discipline”.
Conclusion:It was suggested that to strengthen the basic skills for working adults among new nurses in convalescent rehabilitation wards, it is important to understand individual characteristics and foster effective basic skills for working adults tailored to the characteristics of medical functions.
