Abstract

 In order to create a “comfortable and walkable city center”, parks are required to play a role as a hub for interaction and stay, and Urban renewal corporation are expected to play a role in the development and management of these parks. This study focused on Honmachi Park in Wakayama City, which is one of the first parks in Japan to be developed and managed by urban renewal corporation and others using Park-PFI. Through the author's experience, literature survey and interviews, this study clarified the actual status, problems, and future measures of public private partnerships for urban development centered on Honmachi Park. Specifically, shows the following: 1) the planning and promotion of an integrated strategy for “walkable city planning” led by the author; 2) the intentions of the government in the creation of the city planning areas; 3) the actual status and innovations in the construction of public private partnerships that contribute to improving circulation and creating liveliness etc in the central area.
