Abstract

Earthquake damage to special levees of river due to past major earthquakes was compiled and analyzed. Dynamic centrifuge tests were then carried out to find out the mechanism of the damage. The principal cause of the damage was found to be liquefaction and the number of the damaged levees increased when thickness of the liquefaction layer exceeded around 2m. The mechanism of the damage to special levees of river became clear by the time history records obtained during the experiments.
