The dependency of damage of sewer buried pipelines on the seismic hazards in the 1995 Kobe earthquake and in the 2011 off the Pacific Coast of Tohoku earthquake was discussed focusing on the damage at Kobe city for the Kobe earthquake and at Kamisu city, Hitachinaka city, Mihama ward in Chiba city for the Tohoku earthquake with quantifying damage ratio RL defined by the ratio of disrupted lengths Ld divided by total lengths L of the pipelines. RL data dependent on scales of peak ground velocity PGV and instrumental seismic intensity IJ were evaluated in terms of diameter, material of pipes, microtopography and occurrence of liquefaction, and the associated damage functions were proposed for anticipating the pipelines damage distributed in targeted regional areas.
