Background: Internet is an important source of information for patients who wish to participate in clinical trials. However, the databases in Japan do not sufficiently cover all the clinical trials or publicize the names of medical institutions.
Objective: We aimed to clarify how clinical trial information for patients is publicized by university hospitals in Japan, and how easy the information can be accessed.
Methods: We surveyed the websites of university hospitals available from the University hospital Medical Information Network (UMIN), and investigated the accessibility of clinical trial information for patients. Clinical trial information was evaluated based on 20 items for clinical trials provided by World Health Organization (WHO). Accessibility was evaluated by the number of clicks from the hospital top page to the clinical trial list. As overall evaluation, hospitals were graded into 4 levels (A, B, C, D).
Results: A total of 139 hospitals were included in this survey. As overall evaluation, 14 hospitals (10.1%) were graded as level A, 46 hospitals (33.1%) as level B, 22 hospitals (15.8%) as level C, and 57 hospitals (41.0%) as level D. Also, medical institutions accredited as advanced treatment hospitals and designated cancer care hospitals had lower rates of level D than non-accredited medical institutions.
Conclusion: Medical institutions can support decision making of patients who wish to participate in clinical trial by publicizing clinical trial information using methods that are easy to access by the patients.
