Abstract

The objective of this study was to determine the risk factors associated with the development of glaucoma after cataract surgery in toy poodles. Although postoperative glaucoma has been reported in various breeds, such as Boston terriers, no previous studies have specifically focused on toy poodles, despite their high representation among cataract surgery cases in Japan and their predisposition to diabetes mellitus. Herein, we retrospectively analyzed the impact of diabetes, postoperative ocular hypertension (POH), and perioperative management on glaucoma development.

A total of 102 eyes from 70 toy poodles that underwent phacoemulsification and intraocular lens implantation between January 2018 and December 2021 were included. The dogs were categorized into three groups: Group A (non-diabetic treated with corticosteroids), Group B (non-diabetic treated with robenacoxib), and Group C (diabetic treated with robenacoxib). The incidence of postoperative glaucoma was highest in Group C (37.5%), which was significantly higher than in Group A (p = 0.008). Multivariate logistic regression and Cox proportional hazard models identified POH (OR = 6.50; HR = 4.48) and diabetes mellitus (OR = 5.47; HR = 3.97) as independent risk factors for glaucoma (all p < 0.05). Kaplan-Meier analysis showed earlier onset of glaucoma in Group C. Although the onset time of POH was significantly shorter in eyes that developed glaucoma, logistic regression analysis did not demonstrate a significant relationship. No significant effects were found for the type of anti-inflammatory therapy or postoperative inflammation.

Diabetes mellitus and POH are significant risk factors for postoperative glaucoma in toy poodles. These findings highlight the importance of vigilant intraocular pressure monitoring and management in the early postoperative period.
