Abstract
Anemia in a severe complication in chronic hemodialysis patients. Dialysis anemia is known to be caused by various factors such as decreased erythropoietin activity, short half-life of red blood cells, abnormal parathyroid hormone activity and abnormal levels of trace metals.
We examined the relationship between serum aluminum (Al), zinc (Zn), nickel (Ni), and manganese (Mn) and indicators of anemia RBC, Hb and Hct, in forty chronic hemodialysis patients.
We found significant negative correlations between serum Al levels and RBC, Hb and Hct values in forty chronic HD patients. There were significant positive relationships between serum Zn levels and RBC, Hb and Hct. Significant correlations between serum Ni levels and RBC, Hb and Hct values were also found in our patients. There were significant positive relationships between serum Mn levels and RBC, Hb and Hct values.
