This paper describes the content and outcome of a visiting class aimed at third-grade students on the transmission of force by friction. Pairs of students wore gloves of differing materials and competed to twist a pipe. This enabled them to directly experience how force is transmitted differently in different materials. A survey of the students after the exercise indicated that many of them had enjoyed the experiment and now believed that they had a good understanding of the concept of friction. If a teacher provides a simple experiment, even elementary students in the lower grades can gain a greater understanding of an academic subject. In addition, we also gained some interesting insights concerning how people perceive friction.
