We manufactured voice-producing typewriters to assist totally-blind children with their Braille learning. The apparatuses made by our students in a special manufacturing programme have been donated to the schools for the blind across the country for two years. Our investigation has disclosed that they are effective especially for the children of multiple disabilities to ameliorate their Braille learning. Recently, in collaboration with us the staff, students have developed this humble attempt into a donation project to make a systematic contribution to society in technology. The present paper explains the history of our attempt, public reactions to it, and the result of our survey of blind children’ s improvement in learning, and thus proposes a model of what engineering education at universities can do for the public.
