This paper reports research on mathematics and physics education for freshmen at university with a variety of education backgrounds. Specifically, the new Integrated Curriculum in Mathematics, Science, and Engineering, the introductory first-year course instituted at Kanazawa Institute of Technology, is reported. The approach of innovative curriculum to math and physics curriculum is to raise the academic proficiency of our students to higher level. At our university we have established Placement Mathematics and Placement Physics as introductory courses. Course questionnaires given to the students show that the kind of textbook used has considerable effect on student motivation.
