Thirty three patients with sudden deafness were examined by pure-tone audiometry and the trapezoid rotation test (±2, 4, 6, 8 and 10°/sec2, 10″) using Contraves' computerized rotary chair system, at least 3 times in their clinical course.
Of these patients, 17 (52%) complained of vertigo, and labyrinthine preponderance was noted in 28 cases (85%) in the trapezoid rotation test. Twenty patients (61%) showed a predominance on the impaired labyrinthine side (labyrinthine preponderance, ipsilateral; LPi) transiently during recovery from low tone hearing loss. Therefore, the transient LPi was thought to be a sort of recovery nystagmus.
