With the objective of scaling-up action on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), the Global Action Programme (GAP) on ESD got started in 2015 as a five-year programme. When it was coming to an end in November 2019, the 40th UNESCO General Conference adopted the new global framework on ESD (ESD for 2030) for the period of 2020-2030 as a follow-up challenge to the GAP. The framework was also presented to and adopted at the 74th session of the UN General Assembly with the Resolution 72/222, noting ESD as 'an integral element of SDG4 on Education and a key enabler of all the other SDGs.’This paper reviews the epoch-making framework of the global efforts with particular focus on the wordings and phrases which provide us with insightful direction towards a sustainable future. It also critically attempts to examine the achievement of the UN Decade of ESD and the GAP through the lens of the new framework, highlighting profound transformation of individuals and communities. It further discusses an ambivalent feature of ESD by focusing on some of the essential concepts in the framework. One can find raison d'etre of ESD in its characteristics raising critical questions to development or even to sustainable development itself.
