Patients' data security has become very hot topics in health care system. Most of medical staffs in hospitals deal with the information on many patients by computers. It is important to discuss about their awareness of patients' data security same as the information technology. The purpose of this study was to clarify the awareness of patients' data security among nurses and their factors related to such awareness. We conducted the self administered questionnaire (42 items) with 2108 hospital nurses from February through March 2003 and obtained 1645 (78.0%) valid answers. Statistical analysis chisquare test was used. The average age of respondents were 31.0 ± 8.6 (mean ± SD). There were significant differences between the awareness of confidentiality and computer literacy (p<0.001), and confidentiality and availability (p<0.005). The two points are suggested as follows: 1) Education and arrangement of the protocol are essential with a leader aged over 30 years old, with high computer literacy to improve the awareness of data security, 2) it is urgently desired to undertake the reconstruction of the education about the data security.
