This essay attempts to identify how the abdication of the Emperor Akihito was repor ted in women's weeklies in Japan. By discourse analysis of magazine articles on the Emperor Akihito abdication, it was cleared that the reports in all magazines involed in that analysis represented a perception gap between the Empeoror and the Abe cabinet concerning the signification of symbol, the role of the emperor, and the succession to the throne.
