Abstract
In this study, the mechanism of the penetration of a cone into the ground was investigated analytically and experimentally. The slip line nets around the cone and the contact pressure on the cone surface were calculated three-dimensionally by the slip line. method. In the calculation of the slip line nets, Meyerhof's slip line field for a deep foundation was used.
Using the mean value of the contact pressure, the bearing capacity factors of the cone (Ncqra and Ncra) were calculated for the ratio, Dp/2R (Dp: the penetration depth, 2R: the cone diameter) and the relations between them were expressed in figures.
The existence of the slip lines around the cone penetrated into a clay layer was confirmed by experiment. The experimental values of the ratio, Ic/cu (Ic: the cone index, cu: the undrained shear strength of the clay) were in good agreement with the calculated values (Ncqra and Ncra) for a cone having rough surface. The speed of cone penetration did not affect the ratio Ic/cu within the range of the experiment (the speed range is 1.0cm/sec.(commonly used speed in situ)-1/2000cm/sec.)
