Bacterial resistance to antibiotics has become a worldwide problem. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is thought to cause bactericidal action by the cytocidal effect of singlet oxygen. Therefore, PDT has a low possibility of appearance of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and considered as a new treatment for bacterial infectious diseases. Herein, publications concerning PDT for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus are reviewed in this article, and we report our study about PDT for MRSA using 5-aminolevulinic acid.
