Previous studies have revealed that hard tissues, either bone or dental structures, provide the huge absorption spectrum in the narrow wave band around 9.6μm, and the wavelength at the absorption peak has the crucial importance in the laser surgical effect on hard tissue. This study was designed for the precise reserch for the individual difference of the optical characteristics of bone tissues.
METHOD: Pig bones (femurs and ribs) were applied for the experimental subject. The spectoral analysis of the cortical bone of the different individuals of the subjects was applied in the wave range of 2.17-25.0μm using the fourier transform infrared spectrophotometer FT/IR5300.
RESULT : (1) Every bone tissue has the same wavelength at every infrared spectral peak and no individual difference in the spectral characteristics of bone. This result demonstrates that every bone tissue is composed from the same chemical conponents.(2) The absorbance at every spectral peak, however, is various in each individual bone. This result demonstrates that the contents of the chemical conponents of bone were delicately different in each individual bone.
The results of this experiment demonstrate that every bone tissue has the same infrared spectral peak, and to get the most excellent effect in laser surgery for bone tissue, this result assures that the oscillator must only be based the laser wavelength corresponding to the huge absorption wavelength of bone tissue (9.65-9.67μm) and need not vary the laser wavelength with each different bone tissue.
