Normal and tangential fluctuations in sliding friction are examined by using a newly-designed tester, tribo-vibrometer. A periodically grooved specimen is used in order to emphasize the information of the surface shape in the signals of sliding friction. The fluctuation in sliding friction includes two kinds of dominant components, one of which includes the information of surface shape. A simple method is proposed using coherence and phase of cross spectra between normal and tangential fluctuation in order to select the dominant component including the information of surface shape.
