It becomes apparent that problems in shape data quality cause tremendous economic loss in mechanical industries. In order to resolve these problems, automotive manufacturers jointly create a guideline to improve the quality of product shape data. This paper describes the development of ISO 10303-59, the international standard for product shape data. The standard has been proposed to ISO and is being developed by Japan to capture the quality of product shape data correctly and to promote the circulation of the quality information. The scope, anticipated usage scenarios, management of shape data quality and its representation is described as well as the current development status of the standard.
