This work deals with the energy harvesting characteristics of self-tuning magnetostrictive cantilever both experimentally and numerically. The giant magnetostrictive cantilever is fabricated using thin Terfenol-D layer, SUS layer, movable proof mass, etc., and is designed to adjust automatically its own resonant frequency to external vibration frequency in real time. The tip deflection, induced voltage and resonant frequency were measured. By employing the Finite Element Method (FEM), the resonant frequency of the magnetostrictive cantilevers were calculated. Comparison was made between the experimental and the simulated results. The time-varying behavior and self-tuning ability were then discussed in detail.
