The polymeric film represented by polyvinylidene chloride suffered heavy rolling processing and has the optical anisotropy (birefringence) in unload state by the polymer orientation. For the material having initial optical anisotropy, its anisotropy is added to the optical anisotropy by load. The optical anisotropy (birefringence) has tensor dimension, therefore addition of initial and photoelastic optical anisotropy should be carried out on tensor space. In this paper, the formulation of the optical anisotropy is derived for the material having initial anisotropy which is applied the load and is added to the optical anisotropy. The photoelasticity properties of the polyvinylidene chloride film was experimentally investigated for three kinds of cutting directions. It is found that the photoelastic constant of the polyvinylidene chloride film depends on the cutting direction.
