Manufacturing industry tends toward high-mix low-volume production in recent years. As a result, there is a strong impetus to shorten the manufacturing lead-time of products. CAPP system has been studied to automate process planning in the field of machining. However, complicated target shapes of practical mechanical parts have not been considered especially in multi-axis machining. In order to address this problem, special areas such as chamfer or fillet part are approximated from the target shape, and machining features are recognized by simplifying machining primitives such as bended groove or tapered face. From a result of conducted case study, it is recognized that the proposed feature recognition method has a potential to deal with complicated target shapes in multi-axis machining.
