Abstract
We have developed snow accretion model for an overhead electric wire subject to oblique wind, considering large torsional deformation of an electric wire. Since the basic equation of the torsional deformation of electric wire is highly non-linear due to external moments generated by gravitational and aerodynamic forces on accreted snow, which naturally depend on rotational angle itself, a special iterative technique is employed to solve non-linear algebraic equations derived from finite element method. Such a simulation procedure has been coded as a numerical code, SNOVAL, and is applied to a real power line with empirically assuming a snow capture factor. The quantitative comparisons between the numerical and observational results have shown the promising applicability of SNOVAL.
