Abstract
In recent years, the volume of soot in the engine oil generated by combustion increases by increased use of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) with environmental regulations. The wear resistance of engine parts must be improved because the wear increases with the increase of soot contained in engine oil. The wear resistance of silent chain, which used as power transfer medium of cam shaft drive system, should be improved. However, the wear mechanism of silent chain was not clarified since the load and sliding velocity change during the operation. In this study, the wear mechanisms of pin and plate which consists silent chain are clarified by using ball-on-disk friction tester in oil contains soot. As a result, it has been shown that wear of silent chain mainly occurs at lower speed than 0.05m/s, and soot acts as abrasive for wear.
