In order to develop teaching materials using KATANATSUBA, in this research we studied chemically - induced copper patinas which is one of the process of making KATANATSUBA. Chemically-induced copper patinas are Japanese traditional techniques, but the effects of each process have not been thoroughly studied. Among them, the unknown points are the actions of each components of solution used for Chemically-induced copper patinas and the action of grated Japanese radish. Therefore, in this study, the actions of each components of the chemical solution and the radish grated radish were investigated. An XRD analyzer was used to identify the substance generated on the sample surface. The color tone of the sample surface was evaluated by analyzing the sample images which were taken under the same conditions and compared by using the L * a * b * colorimetric system. From the experiments, the following were revealed, The actions of copper sulfate and the patina, which are components of solution used for Chemically-induced copper patinas, are accelerating the oxidation of copper and the suppression of excessive sulfide formation by copper sulfate, respectively. The active ingredient of radish is allyl isothiocyanate which is a pungent component and it has the effect of generating CuO which causes redness in the sample. From these results, it was possible to clarify that the actions of each chemical component and grated Japanese radish.
