The purpose of this paper is to clarify the contributions of research activities involving the fusion of one cutting edge technology with another, and how these lead to innovations. We introduce a quantitative measure between two technological elements based on the statistics of unexamined patent application data. We will present some analytical results obtained via this novel measure applied to specific developing technological regions, showing it will play an important role to investigate the innovations through technological fusion.
