Small fatigue crack growth test under constant amplitude loading was performed on AZ31 magnesium alloy. The fatigue crack growth behaviour was investigated by crystallographic orientation analysis based on the Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD). The small fatigue crack growth behaviour was strongly affected by grain orientation. The transgranular fatigue crack tended to grow due to the slip deformation along basal slip plane. The crack grew with the activation of cylindrical slip systems in the grains whose Schmid factors of basal slip system were very small. The crack growth rates were slower when the crack growth was due to the slip deformation along cylindrical slip planes.
