The laser absorption and scattering (LAS) measurement was made to investigate the effect of decrease in injection amount on the mixture formation process in a D.I. Diesel spray,. The injection amount was decreased by shortening the injection duration under the same nozzle orifice diameter, and also by decreasing the nozzle orifice diameter (by using the different nozzle with a smaller orifice) under the similar injection duration. The mass of ambient gas entrained and the mass of fuel vapor, both of which are normalized by the total (vapor and liquid) fuel in the spray, at the same timing after the start of injection are increased as the injection amount is decreased. Decreasing the injection mass by the nozzle orifice diameter has a greater effect on the ambient gas entrainment and fuel vaporization comparing with by decreasing the injection duration.
