Dissimilar metals joining between magnesium and aluminum alloys by laser welding and SPR (Self Piercing Rivet) joining were studied. In case of laser welding, intermetallic phase formed in the welded area and can lead degradation of the joining strength. In order to improve the strength, contact block, edge welding and twin beam welding were applied. The results showed that the strengths obtained with the joints welded by those welding methods were comparable with the strength of the joint obtained in solid state joining method. In case of SPR joining, lower strength was obtained when a magnesium alloy sheet was used as a lower sheet. Cracking occurred at a magnesium lower sheet and deformation behavior of the joint could affect the strength of the dissimilar metals SPR joint between magnesium and aluminum alloys.
