Barreling of thick-walled cylinder was controlled in upsetting between conical dies by applying one-way torsional moment. The workpiece with (outer diameter: inner diameter: height) of (2: 1: 3) was compressed axially and simultaneously twisted with maximum 60°/mm between the conical dies. The torsional moment promoted the metal flow in the outer radial direction at the end surfaces of the workpiece. The torsional moment with lower than 6°/mm was effective to reduce the barreling of the workpiece in upsetting. On the other hand, the workpiece was deformed to a hourglass shape in upsetting with higher than 12°/mm.
