The motility of the small intesfine after entero-entero-anastomosis was studied by recording bioelectrical activity with extracellular electrodes. Three different operative techniques in side-to-side anastomosis and four in end-to-end anastomosis were used. The bursting strength of the stoma was assessed to evaluate the recovery of strength in an, astomosed portion of the intestines.
The bioelectrical activity of the anastomosed intestine was recorded at intervals postoperatively with two Ag-electrodes from the oral and aboral portions of the anastomosed intestines, in vivo.
In one week postoperatively, the electrical activities were depressed and the period of the spike burst were irregular. However, about 50% of intervals determined were within the range of 4.5-5.5 sec., and it was shown that the interval time was widely distributed on the frequency table.
In three weeks, the recovery in electrical activity was noted and about 80% of intervals determined were ranged within 4.5-5.5 sec..
In three months following end-to-end anastomosis and in four months following side-to-side an, astomosis, the electrical activity was restored to normal pattern and the standard deviation of spike discharge intervals returned to the normal distribution.
The intestines after anastomosis were bursted with less than 100 mmHg pressureon the second or the third postoperative day regardless of the techniques. However, they were gradually increased in strength and reached to nearly normal strength in two weeks after anastomosis.
