This study aimed to clarify the features of Japanese high school girls' career self-efficacy, and the relationship between this attribute and their interests in certain professions(doctor, nurse, pharmacist, and teacher), in accordance with their desired career patterns. Career self-efficacy was determined according to five aspects: job content, continuation of work regardless of maternity, post-maternity reemployment, entrance to university, and employment. Data on 162 female Japanese students were collected at a preparatory high school that has a high number of science students. Desired career pattern groups were assigned as follows: continuation of work regardless of maternity(n =76), post-maternity reemployment(n =58), and retirement upon marriage or maternity(n =28). The ANOVA results showed the work continuation group's score for self-efficacy regarding work continuation was higher than those for the other two groups. Multiple regression analysis revealed the following in each group: 1)in the group for work continuation, self-efficacy regarding job content was positively related with interest in three professions. 2)In the group for reemployment, self-efficacy regarding job contents and regarding entrance to university was positively related with interest in three professions. 3)In the group for retirement, self-efficacy regarding job content had no significant relationship with interest for any profession. The results suggest that self-efficacy regarding work continuation could be a determinant of career pattern, and self-efficacy regarding job content could be a main determinant of interest in a specific profession in the work continuation or reemployment group.
