Abstract

The purpose of this study was to clarify the appropriate time to exchange pouching systems in the management of peristomal skin. We evaluated the condition of dissolution of skin barriers and skin condition in removing pouching systems of 26 individuals with either ileostomy or colostomy. Based on the condition of dissolution of the skin barriers, all individuals were classified into three groups of swelling, dissolution without fecal leakage(adhesion)or dissolution with fecal leakage (adhesion).Patients were also classified into two groups depending on whether skin trouble was present. While no skin trouble developed in the swelling group, we observed skin trouble in 8.2% of the dissolution group without fecal leakage and 21.3% of the dissolution group with fecal leakage. In conclusion, pouching systems should be exchanged while skin barriers remain during the swelling stage.
