With the many advances in technology, the accuracy of recognizing pictures and voices has increased. However, there are difficulties in developing service or content areas that can utilize this technology, as practical usage levels are currently inadequate due to the presence of such artifacts as shadows and noise. As an alternative plan related to this existing limit of interaction, the concept of a mediating interface is proposed. In this study, the design requirements of a device for a total physical response environment are presented. Additionally, two device types suited to the design requirements are proposed. Especially when deriving the requirements, a protocol analysis method was used. In doing this, the behavior of preschool children was observed and the characteristics of this behavior were characterized. From these analyses, a means of elevating the interaction between a user and a service is given using the two proposed device types which considering the features of the users.
