Abstract
This paper examines the activities of Rudolf Modley in
the Glyphs Inc. established by an anthropologist, Margaret Mead,
with Modley in 1966. Modley, as the co-chairman, played a
central role for the purpose of standardization of graphic symbols
in this organization. His activities can be summarized along the
following five phases: 1) establishing collaborative relationship
with other organizations; 2) planning an exhibition of graphic
symbols; 3) cooperation to the symbol dictionary planned by
Henry Dreyfuss; 4) planning symbol archive; 5) consultation for
standardization of graphic symbols. By outlining them, this paper
reveals how Modley continued to make serious efforts toward the
standardization of graphic symbols throughout his life.
