Abstract

The aim of this study is to find out the characteristics of traditional building decoration of Daowai district in Harbin. The findings can be summarized as below: (1) Basis on the Chinese culture of hope for fortune, various plants and animals engraved on the facade. The features or pronunciation of these elements come with the meaning for good fortune. (2) Craftsmen of that time imitated both foreign architecture style and the decorations. By referred to various works, further, the unique style which combined Chinese and western facade decoration was created. Such decorations are the features of China Western Architecture of Daowai district. (3) The traditional Chinese living culture was inherited through various building decorations. And the consciousness of local people who hoping for a better life was also reflected by the meaningful decorations.
